About Me

Hi, I’m Steve Downs. I’ve lived in Stouffville for 17 years. I am a professional swim coach with the North York Aquatic Club, working with young athletes between 9 and 11 years old who are some of the top swimmers in their age groups in Canada. I also work with the Markham Masters Swim Club coaching adult swimmers. I find it very rewarding to help people of all ages improve their physical fitness and work towards their personal goals.

I have been married to my wonderful wife Dawn for 22 years. We met in Ottawa and moved to Stouffville in 2001. We have enjoyed meeting new neighbours and becoming part of the Stouffville community. If you see us walking our rescue dogs, Riley and Zoey, please say hello!

Why I'm Running For Council

I have followed local politics with great interest over the past 17 years. Over the past 4 years I have become increasingly concerned over the issues that have developed between the mayor and our town council. The negative media attention that has hovered over the town has brought embarrassment to our community. Whitchurch-Stouffville needs a council that works together for the betterment of the entire township, instead of wasting time on ridiculous scandals.

I have developed my communication, problem solving and leadership skills over many years as a professional coach. As a town council member, I would be able to use these skills to help move the town forward, supporting the mayor when appropriate and challenging him or her in a respectful, professional manner when needed.

As a former employee of the town from 2001 to 2007, working as a pool supervisor at both the outdoor pool and the Lebovic Leisure Center (now the Whitchurch-Stouffville Leisure Center) I was able to see firsthand how our municipal employees and recreation programs and facilities function. I relied heavily on my experience with Stouffville, as well as my employment with the municipalities of Tecumseh, Windsor, Nepean, Carleton Place, and the town of Almonte when completing my honours diploma in Recreation Facility Management at Seneca College in 2006. My expertise and experience will be a tremendous asset to council in the development and delivery of recreation programs, the maintenance of our current arenas and pools, as well as the development of future facilities.

I grew up with a family that was deeply involved in the local politics of our small town, a town that was very much like Whitchurch-Stouffville. My father served as a councillor, deputy reeve, reeve, and later the Mayor of Tecumseh. Growing up I saw councils that disagreed with the mayor, but never the kind of infighting and dysfunction that has plagued our current Mayor and Council. My father and his council had many disagreements, but there was always a sense of co-operation and respectful dissent with the goal of the betterment of the community. I truly believe Whitchurch-Stouffville needs to return to this level of civility and working together towards a common goal.
